Newlands Crowned All Ireland Champions in the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy
[ngg src=”galleries” ids=”93″ display=”basic_slideshow”]Woodenbridge Golf Club, who organise the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy competition, were the perfect hosts for the four Provincial final teams. The opening ceremonies were a great start to an unbelievably exciting weekend of golf for Newlands. We were drawn against Malone GC, the Ulster champions, who were in Woodenbridge for their third time and we were delighted to win 3 matches and earn our place in the final on Sunday.
Our final against Co. Sligo GC (Rosses Point) was played in competitive spirit and the quality of the golf was second to none. With two points on the board for Newlands, one match on the 17th, another 1 up on the 18th and one match finishing out on the 19th, the spectators were kept in suspense. As the point was won on the 18th hole, it was a lovely walk up the 18th or back up the 19th hole to be greeted by the huge support that were so visible all day in their fabulous Newlands colours.
What a wonderful day! Words will never describe the sheer joy and excitement of the win. Our first matches in this competition were back in April and what a journey it has been since then. We will all reflect on the wonderful summer of 2019 and this fantastic campaign we have all been involved in, culminating in our great win. Many thanks to the full panel of players who all deserve recognition for their great contribution in getting to the finals in Woodenbridge GC. Well done to all the players, subs and squad who were all involved in this great win. Well done to the Managers, Nuala LeGros and Mary K. O’Mahony, they deserve huge credit for their time and commitment, guidance and motivation throughout the whole campaign. The new silver cup and pennant was presented by Mary McKenna MBE who spoke so eloquently about the competition and her golfing life.
Once again, this wasn’t just a win for this team but was also a win for all of us in Newlands. Check out the extra silverware in the cabinet …. and the All Ireland pennant which has joined the three new Leinster champion pennants already there. Happy days!
