Junior Ryder Cup

Junior Ryder Cup

Monday 15th August

The Newlands Junior Ryder Cup was the brainchild of Ken LeGros. It was first played in 2015 and quickly became a firm favourite among juniors. Winning the trophy is now a highlight of any junior’s year.

The Ryder Cup is always played towards the end of the season. This allows juniors to pick partners and put the strongest pairings forward. This year was no exception.

Fourteen teams of all types participated. There were all boys teams, girls teams and mixed teams including all possible handicap combinations.

The morning qualifiers saw the pairings play the first nine as a fourball. All coped well with this. The move to foursomes for the back nine was entirely different. Juniors, like most members, are not used to this discipline. Scoring took a serious drop as players became aware of the pressure that comes with playing with a partner as part of a team.

The clear leaders after the morning session were Ellen Rockett and Lucy Kavanagh who sportingly called a penalty on themselves. After lunch the afternoon session of nine holes stableford with both scores counting began. The morning had been perfect golfing weather but the afternoon was a different story. Heavy clouds gathered as the first players set out and rain was falling as the leaders went out in the final group. The rain soon turned into a deluge. From the comfort of the clubhouse it was obvious that the event should be cancelled. The players felt differently and insisted on staying out and finishing the competition.

As it turned out the scoring was exceptional. The highlight was an individual score of 21pts by Evan Hollowed playing off a handicap of 2! The final countdown went to the wire. The teams of David Lawley (22)/ Matthew Rockett (17) and Dylan Harbourne (9) / Aaron Raymond (6) tied with 75pts. David and Matthew won on a countback of the afternoon scores by the narrowest of margins.

In third place with an amazing afternoon score of 41pts and a total of 70 pts was the all girl team of Aimee Turner (36) /Caoilinn Gavin(36).

Congratulations to all those who played particularly those braved the elements to finished. Hopefully they’ll never have to play in those conditions again!
