Christmas Mixed Jumper Day

A Big Thank you to everyone who turned out to support our Jumper Day on Tuesday 17th.    We had 32 teams playing on the day and the weather was very kind to us.

We were delighted to help three charities this year.

Naas Food Bank was again very grateful to all who brought the non-perishable food in the weeks leading up to our day, Maud Nolan expressed her thanks as she accepted the food on their behalf.

Mary K O’Mahony was also very appreciative of the donation she received on behalf of Scoil Mhuire gan Smal and she told us about all the children that will benefit from it.

Joanne Fox was thankful for the food donations that will go to people in the Killenarden community and also appreciated the monetary donation which will go to the Sacred Heart Junior School in Killenarden to help some children in need.

We raised €2,200 in total for these charities which shows the character of all the members in Newlands.  As always, the members of Newlands’ generosity is amazing.

Thanks to Gerry and his team on the course.  To Tracey, Pauline and Margaret from Bliss Cuisine for looking after so many at same time, and also Jenny and Tony in the bar.   To Brian and Noel in the Proshop for all their help,  and thanks also to  the ladies committee for all their work checking people in, selling tickets etc.

Winners on the Front 9 were Marie Harpur, Bernie Keppel, David Harpur and Lex Flavin.

Winners on Back 9 were President Aidan Keogh, Sheilagh Keogh, Pat O’Leary and Derek Cleary.

Our Luxurious Hamper was won by Des Parsons, and Joan Sheridan and Ursula Connell were also the winners of 2 additional hampers.

Congratulations to all our winners.  Great day had by all.

Ladies Winter Tea

A great evening was had by all at our Winter Tea, as we continue with this great Newlands tradition.  It’s a chance to welcome in the new Golfing year and celebrate the past golfing year.    And, of course, it’s a chance to share in the Christmas festivities and wish one another every good wish for continued good health at Christmas and the New Year.

We were delighted to welcome our 2018 Gigs who showed their appreciation to Bernie Keppel and the Buddies for all their hard work during the past year.    We also welcomed our 2019 Gigs who enjoyed their first function in Newlands.   A big thank you to Ger Simpson and Helena O’Connell and all the Buddies for all their hard work looking after them.

We had many prizes to present on the night.  Congratulations to Nicola Kearns on winning the Kellsboro Trophy and Esme Murphy on winning the Alice Perry Cup.   We also presented our Hole-in-One winners, Grainne Friel and Eileen McLoughlin with their trophies.  There were medals presented to our Junior Cup, Junior Foursomes and Mary McKenna teams.

We also presented our Turkey vouchers and Hampers to the many prize-winners.   Congratulations to all our winners on the night.

Our Winter League winners were also announced on the night.

First place went to Team 1: Louise Halpin, Fionnuala Croskery, Aisling Neil, Nuala LeGros, Frances Maybery, Marie Fitzgerald, Fionnuala McGlynn and Mary McDonagh.

Runners-Up were Team 3: Ann Hughes, Bernie Keppel, Wendy Hogan, Rita Keane, Sophia McFadden, Edel Tolan, Carmel Shanagher and Marie Dunne.

Just a reminder that the second part of our Winter League, which will be matchplay format, starts in mid-January.   This was a new idea last year with a view to getting matchfit in the run up to our inter-club matches.  So don’t forget to put your names down on sheet in locker room.

Two more Join the Hole-in-One Club

We had two Holes-in-One to celebrate in the last two weeks.

Congratulations to Eileen McLoughlin who was delighted to see her tee shot on the 9th drop into the hole.  Winter golf just got a whole lot easier.

Then just last week Grainne Friel watched her 6 iron shot onto the 16th green follow a lovely path straight into the hole.  You could hear the celebrations in the clubhouse!

I know happiness is a long walk with a putter in your hand but Eileen and Grainne just did away with the putter altogether!

Congratulations to you both and well done.

A Bumper Night for a Bumper Year…..

A great night celebrating all the super and deserved winners in all our competitions, medal winners, club championships, our Golfer of the Year and all our great team achievements in 2019.

We welcomed Niall and Niamh Moore, who continue to honour their parents by sponsoring the Louis and Maureen Moore Fourball Trophy.  Congratulations to Eileen O’Driscoll and Wendy Hogan who were the eventual winners in a very hard-fought competition.  We also welcomed back Nessa Greene who presented us with the beautiful trophy; the Christy Greene Singles Memorial Trophy in honour of her much-loved Dad.  Christy will always be remembered as a great supporter of the Ladies section and Nessa was delighted to present Eva Coghlan, who is the inaugural winner of this beautiful trophy.  We are very grateful for their continued support of both Club championships.

Congratulations also to Eileen McLoughlin and Eadaoin Smith who were delighted to be the eventual winners of the Foursomes Matchplay competition and were presented with the Military Cup.

Congratulations to our medal winners, Grace Keane (April and May), Sarah Callery (June), Deborah McCready (July), Ashling Curtis, (August) and Ger Lynch (September).

It was with great pleasure that the managers of the very successful teams formally presented Captain Marie with the Pennants and Cups representing the great achievements of our teams this year.

Siobhan Byrne – Junior Cup, Neasa McKiernan – Junior Foursomes and Nuala LeGros – Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy, all spoke about their individual campaigns and were delighted to be part of the teams who represented Newlands so well this year.  They thanked everybody who put their name forward, all the players, caddies and the great supporters who were with them all the way.  We will celebrate the summer of 2019 for a long time to come.

The Golfer of the Year award was without doubt a fantastic achievement for a very popular winner in Grace Keane. Grace had an amazing year;  she was in the top five places in six of the 12 Major/Medal competitions which included winning two medals.  She was in the final of the Louis and Maureen Moore club championship, the semi final of the Kellsboro Cup, and the quarter-finals in the Military Cup.  She also represented Newlands so well in the Minor Cup and dropped 4 shots during the season.  We are so proud of Grace and congratulate her on her fantastic golf achievements.  Well done, Grace.

Congratulations to Elaine Anthony who was the very worthy and popular winner of Captain Lex’s Prize.   Elaine made a dash from Croke Park, having witnessed another historic win, and was delighted with her win.   Elaine, playing off a handicap of 15, with a fantastic score of 39 points, took the top prize and commended the course staff on presenting the course in such fantastic condition not only on the day but throughout the whole season.  Well done Elaine.

Newlands Crowned All Ireland Champions in the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy

Woodenbridge Golf Club, who organise the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy competition, were the perfect hosts for the four Provincial final teams.  The opening ceremonies were a great start to an unbelievably exciting weekend of golf for Newlands.  We were drawn against Malone GC, the Ulster champions, who were in Woodenbridge for their third time and we were delighted to win 3 matches and earn our place in the final on Sunday.

Our final against Co. Sligo GC (Rosses Point) was played in competitive spirit and the quality of the golf was second to none.   With two points on the board for Newlands, one match on the 17th, another 1 up on the 18th and one match finishing out on the 19th, the spectators were kept in suspense.  As the point was won on the 18th hole, it was a lovely walk up the 18th or back up the 19th hole to be greeted by the huge support that were so visible all day in their fabulous Newlands colours.

What a wonderful day!   Words will never describe the sheer joy and excitement of the win.  Our first matches in this competition were back in April and what a journey it has been since then.  We will all reflect on the wonderful summer of 2019 and this fantastic campaign we have all been involved in, culminating in our great win.   Many thanks to the full panel of players who all deserve recognition for their great contribution in getting to the finals in Woodenbridge GC.  Well done to all the players, subs and squad who were all involved in this great win.  Well done to the Managers, Nuala LeGros and Mary K. O’Mahony, they deserve huge credit for their time and commitment, guidance and motivation throughout the whole campaign.  The new silver cup and pennant was presented by Mary McKenna MBE who spoke so eloquently about the competition and her golfing life.

Once again, this wasn’t just a win for this team but was also a win for all of us in Newlands.   Check out the extra silverware in the cabinet ….  and the All Ireland pennant which has joined the three new Leinster champion pennants already there.   Happy days!

Clare Delahunty accepts her prize from Vice Captain Loretto

What a wonderful day.  A great competition with a very popular winner.

Congratulations to Clare Delahunty who won Vice Captain Loretto’s prize with a magnificent score of 40 points.  Clare was truly delighted with her win and we also congratulate her on her new handicap of 14.  The course was, of course, in fantastic condition and there was some fantastic scoring on the day.  Well done to Laura Byrne who also had 40 points on the day but was pipped on the back 9.    The gross winner was Esme Murphy with a fantastic 33 gross points playing off a handicap of 3.  Well done to all the winners on the day.

Congratulation to VC Loretto, the day was so enjoyable and it was followed by a super evening celebrating all that is good about golf and our great club.

Leinster Titles… on the Double

All Ireland Final date for Junior Cup and Junior Foursomes

One at a time……

Junior Foursomes team teed it up first in the K. Club on Sunday 1st September to get our quest for two East Leinster Pennants on the road.  Patricia Heffernan and Denise Tobin got off to a great start and they continued to march on with their match ending on the 14th hole.   The 2FM, Frances Mahon and Frances Mayberry , had to march a little longer winning their match on the 18th.  Wendy Hogan and Deborah McCready, who contributed hugely in getting us into the final, were the third match out.  We are so proud of all these great players and subs, VC Loretto Keane and Rita Keane.  Managers, Neasa McKiernan and Bernadette Flynn were delighted to receive the Cup and Pennant on behalf of their team.

Junior Cup team teed off just after the Junior Foursomes team and with great support to see them off we wished them all the very best of luck.  This super team, Rosaleen Cunningham, Leonie Colgan, Louise Murphy, Annemarie Lawley and Neasa McKiernan, played superb golf against a very strong Naas GC side.  Leonie and Louise brought in the points early and with the remaining matches still playing, Rosaleen won her match on the 17th hole.  Boom… Three matches in.   Well done to all the players, caddies, subs, Grainne Friel and Genevieve Tracy who have all contributed greatly on the road to the final.    Managers, Siobhan Byrne and Louise Halpin were also delighted to receive our second trophy and pennant on behalf of their team.  We were all delighted to bring the silverware back to Newlands.

Such excitement and joy!   This wasn’t just a win for these two teams, it was a win for all of us in Newlands.   All the players, subs, caddies and great supporters were thrilled to be part of the journey which has brought us to the National Finals in Knightsbrook GC starting on 25th September.    Check out the new silverware in the cabinet ….  and the three new Leinster champion pennants.

What a win for our Ladies Junior Foursomes team ….

Another great day for Newlands with a win over Corrstown GC in our semi final matches played in Seapoint GC.

This was another super performance by our Junior Foursomes team, Patricia Heffernan and Denise Tobin, Frances Mayberry and Frances Mahon, Wendy Hogan and Deborah McCready, sub on the day was Rita Keane.

We have had exciting finishes in all our campaigns, but the manner of this win shows the calibre and determination of this team.  As we headed into the final holes of the third match, we were even with one match each from the first two matches.  Heading up the 18th, we were 1 down and our ball was in the bunker!  Wendy Hogan took a shot out of the deep bunker that Rory McElroy would have loved to be able to do in Portrush!  The ball hit the flag and dropped a couple of inches from the hole and with that we were all square and heading down the 19th hole.  A nail-biting finish got us over the line and we are now in the East Leinster Final which will be played in the K Club on the Palmer course on  1st September.

All the matches were played in great spirit and the players were a credit to their respective clubs.  The many supporters out in Seapoint were treated to fantastic golf played by both teams.  Many thanks to all who traveled out to Seapoint, it will be great to see all that purple again in the K Club in September.

Well done and congratulations to Managers Neasa McKiernan and Bernadette Flynn.

East Leinster Final will be played in the K Club, Palmer Course on 1st September 2019.
