Ladies have a Win/Win Weekend

Junior Cup and Junior Foursomes march into Quarter Finals

All good news to report …

First up last week was the Junior Foursomes team against Killeen GC in Elm Park on Friday 14th June.  First points went to Wendy Hogan and Deborah McCready who won their match early to give the team a great start.  It wasn’t long before the pairing of VC Loretto Keane and Patricia Heffernan had their point in the bag also.  Last match out was 1 up when the pairing of Frances Mahon and Joan Sheridan were called in.    Congratulations to manager, Neasa McKiernan, assistant manager, Bernadette Flynn, all the players and subs.  A truly great win – we are absolutely delighted and look forward to the quarter finals.  Venue and opposition still to be confirmed.

So next up was the Junior Cup team playing against Old Conna on the O’Meara course in Carton House on Sunday 16th June.  An early point for Leoine Colgan, with Dad, Ray on her bag, gave the team the start we wanted.  Great way to spend Father’s Day!  A super team performance, Leonie Colgan, Pauline Curtis, Mary K. O’Mahony, AnneMarie Lawley and Louise Murphy made it a great weekend of golf for Newlands.  Congratulations to Manager, Siobhan Byrne and assistant manager, Louise Halpin.  Thank you to all the players, caddies and subs.   Well done to you all, great golf and we look forward to supporting you all in the quarter finals.

Just one shot in it……

The Ladies Senior Foursomes team played in the District Qualifier in Craddockstown GC on Sunday 9th June and unfortunately missed out on qualifying by just one point.  The team went out in the most horrendous conditions of the day and to miss out on qualifying by just one point is just heartbreaking.  As the early starters were in the clubhouse, our team battled the elements and still came in within a whisker of qualifying.  Many thanks to you all for representing us so well in a tough competition, we are very proud of you.   Well done and many thanks to team managers, Bernie Keppel and Babs Sweny, the players and subs for all the time and commitment to the Team of Us.

Junior Captains’ Drive In – 3rd June 2019

The official launch of the Junior Golf programme took place on a sunny June Bank holiday Monday afternoon.  The Junior Captains Kate Nolan and Dylan Hughes had their Drive In followed by a 9 hole scramble for all juniors.  We wish both Captains the best of luck for the coming busy junior season.

Professional Brian Cosgrove’s Prize to the Ladies 28 May 2019

Congratulations to Ann Hughes who claimed our first Major of the year.  Ann, playing off a handicap of 9 and with a fantastic score of 40 points, took top honour in Professional Brian Cosgrove’s Prize to the Ladies on Tuesday 28th May.  Ann was delighted with her win and commended the course staff on presenting the course in such fantastic condition after some tough weather conditions on Monday.  Congratulations also go to Patricia Heffernan who took the runner up spot with 39 points on a countback and also to Esme Murphy who, playing off a handicap of 3, won the Gross prize with 35 gross points..  Well done to all the winners on the day.

It was a hugely successful day and thanks to all of you for your support for Brian.  There were 121 entrants in the main competition, 7 entrants in the 9 Hole Qualifying competition and another 12 playing social golf.

We would like to thank Brian for the super prizes and his sponsorship of the competition and we wish Brian continued success here in Newlands.

Ladies Team News

Mary McKenna Team March on to Leinster Quarter Finals

The Mary McKenna team went on to claim the one match they needed in the return matches against Grange Castle GC in the Mary McKenna Diamond Trophy.  A great team went out to Grange Castle for the one point needed and thankfully they brought it home.  Next up was Black Bush GC and the matches were played in beautiful sunshine on Sunday, 12th May.  The matches were very close at the end and it took another tour to the 20th hole before we could claim the winning point.  The matches were played in great spirit and I am delighted to report that we are now in the Leinster Quarter Finals.  Many thanks to the managers, Nuala LeGros and Mary K. O’Mahony and all the team and their caddies for their time and commitment.  Best of luck to the Mary Macs.

Senior Cup Team Bow out in Great Style

Our Senior Cup team went out and played in Dun Laoghaire GC on Saturday 18th May and represented us so well.  It is a great honour to play in this prestigious competition and our Senior Cup team played great golf and were great ambassadors for Newlands GC.  Castle GC were great opposition and all matches were played in great spirit.  It always comes down to one or two putts, the odd bounce of the ball, but we get better every year.  We will look forward to supporting next year’s team and hopefully they will achieve a win in this great competition.   Many thanks to the managers, Genevieve Tracey and Pat O’Leary and all the team for their time and commitment.  Well done Team.

Junior Cup Team Through to Next Round

Congratulations are in order to a great team who played against Westmanstown GC in Slade Valley GC on Sunday 19th May.  The fantastic golf played on the day ensured their progress into the next round.  Three matches were already won when we could call in the other two matches which were 3 up and 4 up.   We will certainly look forward to the next round in Carton House on Sunday 16th June.   Many thanks to the manager, Siobhan Byrne, and all the team for a job very well done.

Boyne Cup Team Bring us Back to 20th Hole

Hard luck to another great team who played so well against Edmondstown on Monday 20th May.  With three matches away and just two matches at home it was always going to be hard work to get through to the next round of the Boyne Cup.  All the players played so well and it was another nail biting finish with the deciding matches out on the 19th and 20th holes.  Luck was not on our side this time and the honours went to Edmondstown GC who go through to the next round.  Many thanks to the managers, MaryPat Prendergast and AnnMarie McGarry, all the players and their caddies for all their hard work, time and commitment to the team.  We look forward to next year.

Half time in the Mary McKenna and Bloom Cup…

With one leg complete, it is all to play for in the second leg of both competitions.

The Mary McKenna team had a great day out at home on the 19th April and took all 5 matches on the day.  It was a great achievement against strong Grange Castle opponents on a beautiful day with the course looking it’s best.  As usual the matches were all played in great spirit and we look forward to the second leg which will be played in Grange Castle on Thursday 2nd May.  Just one match needed to get us into the next round.  Many thanks to the managers, Nuala LeGros and Mary K. O’Mahoney and all the team and caddies for their time and commitment.  Best of luck to the Mary Macs.

In totally different conditions, we played the first leg of the Mark Bloom Cup in Ballinascorney on Wednesday 24th April.  The rain poured down as we did our best and came away with a win in one match to bring home for the second leg.  So 2½ matches needed at home to get us into the next round.  We can do it!

Many thanks to Managers, Audrey Burke and Sheila Church and all the Bloom Cup team and caddies for their time and commitment.

We wish both teams the very best of luck in the second leg of both competitions.

Inter Club Match Reports

Our Intermediate Cup team were in Lucan Golf Club for a 1.00 p.m. start to our 2019 campaign against The K Club.  With one match in early we were feeling confident,  but it was not to be as the K Club came out winners in the hard fought matches on the day.   Our Newlands team did not give up easily and can be proud of their performance.  Many thanks to Managers, Ann Hughes and Bernie Keppel, and also to a team of great players and their caddies for all their efforts, and their time and commitment to the Team of Us.

While the Intermediates were battling it out in Lucan, the Minor Cup team were teeing up in Killeen Golf Club for the first round of their 2019 campaign.  Castlewarden GC were our opposition on the day and we were flying it with two matches in early.  It was 2-1 to Newlands as the last two matches headed towards 19th and 20th holes.  The 20th hole seems to be the norm now as we battled it out for the final match we needed.  Having had a great come back from 4 down, we eventually lost on the 20th hole.  So now it was 2-2 and after a great battle Castlewarden G.C. took the final match on the 19th hole and they will go through to the next round.  Many thanks again to Managers Grainne Friel and Ursula Connell, the players and caddies who all gave their very best on the day.

Thank you to both teams for all your time and commitment, you all represented us in exemplary fashion and we are enormously proud of you.  We look forward to 2020!

Launch of the Christy Greene Memorial Trophy

After a long and special relationship with Newlands, Christy Greene has left a wonderful legacy behind him and on Tuesday 23rd April, Nessa Greene presented us with a beautiful trophy in her Dad’s name.  There will be a qualifying round on Tuesday 7 May for the match play phase, which will continue throughout the summer.  Nessa informed me after the launch that the 7th May is actually the second anniversary of her father’s death.  So it is rather apt that we have the qualifier on that date.  It was meant to be.

We are very grateful to Nessa and with the establishment of this new competition in Christy’s name, his memory will live long in Newlands Golf Club.

Ladies First Open of 2019

Sponsored by Windyridge Nurseries and Garden Centre

We had our first Ladies Open of 2019 on Thursday 25th April.  Although the weather was a little wet and windy, we still had over 100 ladies out playing on the day.

The course was presented in great condition and I would like to thank Gerry Byrne and his team for their work on the course.  It looks particularly beautiful at the moment with the leaves coming out on the trees, the blossoms on the trees and all the flowers coming into bloom.  I would also like to thank Bliss Cuisine, Tracey and her team both in the restaurant and the kitchen for the excellent meals which were enjoyed by members and their guests all day.

Windyridge Nurseries & Garden Centre were our sponsors on the day, and we are very grateful for their support.  A family run business based on Rochestown Avenue in Dun Laoghaire and is a must for any keen gardener.  Marie Harvey of Windyridge was unable to join us on the day but I’m sure Marie, a member in Rathfarnham, will join us for another Open during the summer season.  We thank Windyridge most sincerely for their kind sponsorship of Thursdays Open.

The beautiful array of flowers and plants went to the worthy winners, Wendy Hogan, (Newlands) Fiona McCullagh (Edmondstown) and Yvonne Lynch (Edmondstown).
