Appointment of new PGA Club Professional

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Brian Cosgrove as our PGA Professional and he will join us on April 11th.

Brian will be joining us from Killeen Golf Club at Kill, County Kildare, where he joined as PGA Head Professional in 2011 and became Director of Golf in 2015.
Brian learned his golf at Carne Golf Club in Mayo and completed an Honours Degree in Sports Science at University of Limerick in 2003.

He was attached to Milltown Golf Club and Rathsallagh Golf Club as an Assistant Professional before opening his own golf academy in Athy in 2009, prior to joining Killeen Golf Club. Brian has a Class AA PGA status and is a PGA Sports Science Tutor at the PGA Training Academy HQ at The Belfry.

He has been heavily involved in supporting team activities at Killeen Golf Club which has celebrated 5 Mens Leinster pennants in recent years. Brian was also a Special Olympics Golf Tutor in 2010/2011. On the fairways, Brian was part of the Irish team which won the TGI Partnership Trophy at St. Andrews in 2018, winning four matches and halving one.

Please welcome Brian and his staff, we wish him a very successful career at Newlands.

Our sincere thanks to the subcommittee of Aidan Keogh (Convenor), Grainne Friel, Eamon Keating, Genevieve Tracy and Dermot Usher, which conducted a very professional campaign to secure the services of Brian as our PGA Professional.

Club Professional Vacancy

Newlands Golf Club has almost 120 years of history and, located beside the M50 and N7 road networks, it is home to one of the premier courses in the Dublin area. Substantial upgrades to the golf course and clubhouse were completed in 2010 and provide almost 1000 members with an exceptional golfing experience.

 

The Club has hosted numerous prestigious events, including the GUI All Ireland Cups and Shields Finals in 2001 and the Irish Ladies Amateur Open in 2010. It has a long-standing reputation for the development of junior golf and for consistently high achievement in club golf at all levels.

Following the retirement of our Club professional of 26 years, we wish to contract for services a qualified PGA Professional who will deliver services that are an integral
part of our Club operations.

The services provided will include the following:

  • A front of house role interfacing with members and visitors to
    ensure an excellent experience.
  • Membership promotion and retention.
  • Involvement in coaching at all levels and ages, and the preparation of teams.
  • The provision of an attractive and comprehensive retail outlet.
  • Involvement in the development and delivery of a revenue development strategy.

The successful applicant will have the following attributes:

  • A minimum of three years’ experience as an accredited PGA professional and a commitment to continuous personal development.
  • The ability to act effectively as an ambassador of the Club through strong interpersonal and team player skills.
  • The business acumen to manage a profitable retail activity.
  • A track record as a teacher utilising the latest teaching technologies.
  • The communications skills to positively engage with members and visitors in a one to one capacity and through social media.
  • A strategic vision of how to provide the best possible golf experience to members and visitors.
  • A comprehensive understanding of exceptional customer service.

Golf Ireland – One Governing Body – Podcast

The GUI and ILGU have published a proposal for a single governing body for golf in Ireland. Clubs will vote on this proposal in January 2019.

 To give a better understanding on what the new body will do and how it will be for the good of the game, Pat Finn (CEO, GUI) and Sinead Heraty (CEO, ILGU) took part in a recent podcast where they answered questions from golfers about the plan.

Owen Caughey nominated as Vice Captain for 2019.

I am delighted to announce and nominate Owen Caughey as my Vice Captain for 2019.

 Owen has been a member of Newlands since 1979 and has been a great servant to Newlands Golf Club.  He has been a Bloom Cup winner and has also represented Newlands in the Leinster Fourball, Best Cup and the JB Carr Trophy. In recent years he has managed the JB Carr Trophy with great enthusiasm.

 Owen has served on the Building Sub-Committee of the Club and has been a member of the Management Committee for the past three years.

Owen has given selfless time and commitment to Newlands and I am very pleased that he has accepted my invitation to be my Vice Captain and work with the Ladies Club incoming Captain, Marie Harpur and Vice-Captain, Loretto Keane to the benefit of all Newlands members.

Winter Golf Survey Results

You will recall that earlier this year the Men’s committee conducted a survey on members views around the operation of the winter golf programme.

We are very grateful to the 200 member who took the time to complete the survey the results of which have been collated and are available from the document link below. Please note you will need to be logged into the members area of the Website to view and download the results document.

From your feedback we will be

  • Amending the Winter Minus allocation process for the coming winter season
  • Introducing some straight 12 hole competition formats
  • Subject to numbers introducing a winter league which Shay Brennan has agreed to administer.
