Jake Whelan in South of Ireland 2017

Jake Whelan proudly represented Newlands in The South Of Ireland 2017 at Lahinch, July 26th – 30th. Jake gave an exhibition of wonderful golf over 5 games and showed the rest of the country the excellent talent that Newlands members see day-in day-out.

In very challenging weather conditions on one of the toughest courses in the country, Jake came through the first two days of qualifying showing great form. He was drawn on the morning of Round 1 of the match play against Peter Kerr of Royal Portrush GC and triumphed after a marathon battle that went to the 25th hole. The players play 36 holes each day of the match play so Jake had a quick turnaround to face Stuart Grehan of Tullamore GC, one of the title favourites. This neck & neck match went to the 18th with Jake emerging victorious.

Saturday morning brought Round 3 of the match play and a draw against Robert Cannon of Balbriggan GC. The Newlands members and friends that supported Jake since Wednesday saw him bow out of the tournament at the end of his 5th game in 4 days.

Congratulations Jake, and caddie Ian Harbourne, on an excellent performance. You did Newlands proud.

GUI One Governing Body

GUI would like to hear from Club Members aged between 25-40 regarding the One Governing Body initiative.

See below:

Dear Hon Sec/Club Communications Officer,

The GUI and the ILGU have made significant progress in the discussions around the creation of One Governing Body (OGB) for Golf in Ireland, since the Discussions began in November 2015.

The OGB Discussions Group will be consulting once again with affiliated clubs and officials but would also like to engage with a more focused segment of golfer. This consultation will ensure golfers/non-golfers falling into the age bracket of 25-40 will have their say and will help shape the draft proposal for OGB for Golf in Ireland.

People falling into this age category tend to be time poor and the DG would like to seek feedback from current and past golfers on how to develop the game and make it more attractive to this group. It is crucial that the OGB engages with people who have left the game due to a lack of time and other commitments.

The consultation meeting will be facilitated by Jane Williams, who is a highly experienced independent consultant. Jane will facilitate the meeting in a way which allows attendees to share open and honest feedback on the topics being discussed. Comments and thoughts shared by participants on the draft proposal will not be attributed back to any individual.

The separate dates and venues are listed below. Please follow the links below to register for one of the three sessions:
