W.P. Cant Perpetual Challenge Cup (1955)

W.P. Cant Perpetual Challenge Cup (1955) Of the many “greats” who were founder members of Newlands Golf Club who subsequently gave their all in the development of the Club, there were perhaps a few who shone a little brighter than others. W.P. Cant was one of those who, by any standards, must be numbered amongst the greatest pillars of the Club during its formative  years.

He served as a Trustee of the Club from 1926 to 1954 and as President in 1951 and 1952. In this regard, it should be borne in mind that in those early years in particular, the responsibility of Trustees extended to the control of expenditure of every kind. It can be said of him that his work as a Trustee contributed in no small way to the survival of the Club on many occasions. He presented the W.P Cant Cup to the Club in 1955 and he died in 1959. He had been an Honorary Life Member when he died.

The trophy is presented annually to the winner of the Club Singles match  play event.

Shamie Kelly Memorial Trophy (1982)

Shamie Kelly Memorial Trophy (1982) Shamie was one of the best golfers to play at Newlands and was regarded as one of the finest golfers in Ireland. He beat Joe Carr at his peak in the Senior Cup and partnered Walker Cup player from Malahide GC, Tom Craddock, to win the prestigious Grange Foursomes on numerous occasions. Shamie also won the Milltown Mixed Foursomes matchplay event, a big event for many years, with the youthful Maisie Mooney of Slade Valley GC, later to become an Irish Ladies International.

He made a huge contribution to Newlands in his role as Course Manager from the late 60’s until his untimely death in 1988, leading the way in the planting of the many trees which distinguish the course today, and raising the standard of maintenance and presentation of the course to a new level. The trophy, inaugurated by General Committee in 1982, is presented annually to the winner of Class 1 winner on Trophies Day.

Kellsboro Jack Cups (1933)

Kellsboro Jack Cups 1933 Two Cups were presented in 1933 by Mr.P.J. Muldowney and Mr. .J.T. Hartigan as a tribute to the performance of a horse named “Kellsboro Jack” which won the English Grand National at Aintree in that year. Both men were members of the Club and held the winning ticket in the Irish Sweepstakes on the race. The Kellsboro Jack Cups are played for annually by the Ladies and men of Newlands.

Robin Hood Cup (1922)

Robin Hood Cup 1922 Our oldest trophy had its first outing in 1922 when Mr P. Norton defeated Mr T.Maxwell in the match play final, with 16 players having qualified following a stroke play qualifying event. The winner was cut in handicap from 21 to 16 but went on to successfully defend the title the following year beating Mr J. Foggs, a 3 handicapper and regular winner in Club competitions, in the final. Alas, Mr Norton, off his new handicap of 10, failed to make it a hat trick of wins in 1926 when Mr R.H. Mullins was a new winner.

Winning brought with it the responsibility to ensure the trophy was insured to the value of £12.12.0 with the documentation lodged with the Club for safe keeping.  The trophy is now presented to a Class winner on Trophies Day.

Ned Tobin Perpetual Trophy (1982)
Club Fourball Championship

Ned Tobin Perpetual Trophy (1982) Club Fourball Championship

Ned was a famous Irish athlete with many over 30 Irish titles in the shot putt and other events, setting a world record in Cashel in 1935 for the 56 pound hammer throw. A Garda Sergeant from Tipperary, Ned settled in Dublin and became a single figure golfer at Newlands, serving on Committee and as a Trustee.

A big man in every sense, Ned had his own way of playing the old 18th hole with out of bounds on the left off the tee. An eight iron off the tee followed by two more eight irons was a method he used to good effect to get his par on 18.

In his memory, the Trophy is presented annually to the winners of the Fourball match play event.

P.G Gallagher Trophy (1982)
Club Foursomes Championship

The extent of Paddy Gallagher’s contribution to Newlands is easily measured by the several references to him in the history of the Club written for the Centenary year. As a player, committee member and Officer of the Club, and its Secretary Manager, Paddy made a unique contribution to Newlands which will never be forgotten by all who knew him. A trophy in his memory has been presented to the annual winners of the Club Foursomes since 1982.
