Year: 2018

Newlands Captains’ Drive-in 2018

The Newlands members gave a warm and rapturous welcome to our new Captains Pam Power and Jack Dunne on a bitterly cold St. Patrick’s Day.
The support for the Captains’ Drive-In was fantastic as usual and in the photo the Captains display the golf balls that each drove with unerring accuracy down the middle of the 1st fairway. Many keen golfers braved the cold to compete in the Team Scramble before repairing to the clubhouse to watch Ireland’s triumphant rugby Grand Slam victory over England. This was followed by a superb dinner and a night of music, song and dance facilitated by guest musician Pat Adams.
A wonderful event!

Bridge Players applaud winners of President’s Prize

The President of Newlands’ Bridge Club – Patricia Heffernan – presented her prize to worthy and popular winners – Margaret Carroll and Bridie Webb at the Bridge Club’s Annual Dinner, on the 9th March last. We send them our congratulations.

Well done to all involved. It was a great celebration of another great year for the Bridge Club.

Junior Locker Room (Locker Allocation 2018)

The Junior Committee has put a considerable amount of work into renovating the Junior Room. With the help of Club Members, especially Michael O’Reilly and Aidan Wynne, the room has been freshly painted, excess furniture had been removed and a comfortable 3 piece suite is in place. We hope this will make the Junior Room a relaxed friendly meeting place for all our juniors.
A major addition to the Junior Room was the construction of lockers exclusively for junior use. These have been in place for over 4 years. The original intention was that lockers would be used by players on a daily basis as a way of keeping clubs or equipment safe while playing or between games. With only 12 lockers it was never intended to be a solution for all golfers but it was expected that regular golfers would have access as required.
In the event the lockers have rarely been available to most juniors. Lockers have been used as private lockers with juniors retaining keys on a long term basis. This may be understandable but it is not fair and cannot be accepted through 2018.
As an alternative we are suggesting that a number of lockers be given to juniors on a seasonal basis. We are aware that some juniors have difficulty accessing the club while carrying clubs. We hope that assisting those in particular need will free up the other lockers for the daily use which was their original intention.
We are asking any junior who feels they would benefit from having a locker to write a short note or mail giving brief reasons why they should be given priority in allocating keys. Karen Hughes continues the role of managing the Junior Room and all communications regarding the Junior Room and lockers should be addressed to Karen @
A decision on the allocation of lockers will be made by a subcommittee chaired by Karen Hughes in March 2018.

Junior Captains for 2018

The Junior Committee is delighted to announce that Conor O’Reilly and Ellen Rockett have accepted the invitation to become our Junior Captains for 2018.

We would like to wish our 2017 Junior Captains  Cameron Raymond and Orlaith Leahy well in their future careers. Orlaith will be continuing her studies while Cameron is making his move into the professional golfing circuit.

Food Bank grateful to all the Jumpers

Our Christmas Jumpers event, held on the 19th December last, raised €2030 and sent a substantial amount of food parcels to the Naas Food Bank Charity.

Maud Nolan, a volunteer with the Charity was most grateful and spoke passionately and emotionally about the work she, and others, do with the Charity. It felt good that while we were wrapping up our golfing season with a fun event we could, in some small way, help others less fortunate than ourselves.

Thanks to Genevieve Tracy for organising some sponsorship for us. Thanks to Captain Jack and Paddy Butler for providing a hamper for the raffle. Patricia Shelley and Loretto Keane also provided raffle prizes for which we were very grateful. Thanks to the Ladies Committee for organising the event, and a very big thank you to all the members who played and contributed so generously to this worthy cause.
