Loretto Keane makes it two in a row by winning VC Marie’s Prize

Could lightning strike twice Loretto asked as she teed-up in the Vice-Captain’s Prize. She was of course referring to the fact that she had won the Vice-Captain’s Prize in 2017.

Playing as well as she did on Saturday, everything is possible, and with a score of 39 points on the last 6, Loretto made it two VC Prize wins in a row by winning Vice-Captain Marie Harpur’s Prize, on Saturday last, 18th May 2018.

Well done Loretto, a great achievement that will be difficult to emulate. Well done too to all the winners, and to the organisers, a great day was matched by a great night of celebrations.

The Liffey Valley Kia Open full time-sheet produces great scores

The Liffey Valley Kia Open, held on Thursday 23rd August, again proved very popular with members and visitors and attracted a full time-sheet. We are very grateful to Rita and Gabriel Keane for their generous sponsorship.

Like the Kia Car, the Open had ‘the power to surprise’ and our own Louise Halpin (9), Mary K O’Mahony (12), and Siobhan Byrne (13), were surprised that their great score of 90 points was not good enough to take top honours when they were narrowly beaten on the last 9.

We congratulate Echo Tong (22) Elmgreen, Gillian Poon (23) St Anne’s, Wenjuan Zhao (31) Headfort on their win. Their team also recorded 90 points. Echo Tong in her acceptance speech mentioned how she loved playing the Newlands course (she had won in Newlands previously in the Husband and Wife competition) and how she delighted she was to record three birdies as part of her contribution to the winning card.

Well done to the winners, and many thanks to Kia Liffey Valley for their sponsorship – it was another great day in Newlands.

Juniors lose out in final of Dick Walsh Trophy

Newlands Juniors Narrowly Lose Out in Dick Walsh Final – after a pulsating semi final in Castle Golf Club last Sunday morning against Elm Park in which Adam Fearon holed the winning putt on the 22nd hole, the Newlands team of Leo Fearon/Matthew Rockett, Adam Fearon/Brian Elliott and Ellen Rockett/Lucy Kavanagh made it through to the final of the Dick Walsh Trophy on a 2-1 scoreline. The same boys pairings faced Grange in the afternoon final and Eva Coghlan/Orlaith Leahy came in for Ellen/Lucy – another closely fought and high quality match ensued, with two games going all the way to the 18th before Grange emerged triumphant. Newlands team manager, Ken Legros, was delighted with how the players played on the day and also how they conducted themselves on and off the course – “they were a credit to Newlands Golf Club”. The team received great support too, with past captains , current captains , current vice captains and many more in attendance throughout the day – this was very much appreciated by Ken and the team. Ken would also like to thank Alex Raymond and David Lawley, who both played in the group stages of the competition and helped Newlands to reach the play offs, but were unfortunately not available to play last Sunday.

Eva Coghlan wins Newlands Girls’ Open

Newlands annual Girls’ Trohpy Open.was held on Friday 17 August. This is the 25th year anniversary of the presentation of this trophy to the Junior Section in Newlands by Christy Green. It was particularly good, therefore, on this 25th anniversary that our own Eva Coghlan won the day with a fantastic score of 43 pts, playing off a handicap of 11. What a score! It was a brilliant day despite the weather. Thirteen golf clubs were represented in the competition. We are grateful yet again for the generous sponsorship of Prendergast Construction.

Newlands’ Pair take runner-up spot in Countess of Granard All-Ireland Final

Newlands hosted the Countess of Granard All-Ireland finals on Monday 13th August, 2018. Over 100 clubs sent the winners of their qualifying competitions, held earlier in the year, to Newlands to compete for the All-Ireland Countess of Granard Cup.

The Castletroy competitors – Eimear Cregan (11), and Evan Martin (13) with a total of 37 points took the cup home to Limerick, hoping as they did, that it will be the first cup travelling to Limerick, and the Liam McCarthy will follow soon. We congratulate them on a great performance.

And we are very happy to report that our representatives Esme Murphy (3) and Deborah McCreedy (20) took runner-up spot with their score of 36 points. Well done Ladies, we are very proud of you.

All the proceeds from this event go to the NCBI, and we congratulate Rory McGinley and his team Rosin and Angela who did a splendid job organising the event. They were fulsome in their praise of Lylia Crossan who has a long association with this Charity and worked tirelessly on the day with the NCBI team. Members of the Ladies Committee also received great praise from the NCBI for their assistance in preparing for, and organising, the event.

Leinster Women’s Junior Championship (Duggan Cup) finalist – Leonie Colgan

It was a great weekend. The ILGU, players, and spectators were full of praise for Newlands – our members, our Clubhouse, and most especially our course.

And to top our great weekend, we had performances on the course worthy of note:-

After 36 qualifying holes, Esme Murphy qualified for the match play stages of the Leinster Women’s Championship where she had a fantastic win over Michelle Cheung from Hong Kong. She was eventually beaten by Elisa Corcoran from Grange in the quarter finals but our congratulations to Esme on a great performance, and on her deserved best nett winning score from the qualifiers.

Seven Newlands players came through a tough first round of the Leinster Women’s Junior Championship (Duggan Cup) to qualify for the matchplay stages of this competition – Eva Coughlan, AnnMarie Lawley, Neasa McKiernan, Ger Lynch, Grainne Friel and Leonie Colgan. While there was disappointment on the 18th and 19th holes for some of our players, Leonie Colgan, playing superb golf, gave the home supporters plenty to cheer about by winning her way through three rounds of matchplay to reach the final on Sunday afternoon.

We had hopes that Leonie would emulate the feat of Masie O’Callaghan from Newlands, who in 1962 was the winner of the Duggan Cup and whose name is proudly engraved on the current trophy. As rain clouds gathered, so too did the supporters, and it was great to see Ray Colgan looking well, and back on the course to support his daughter. But alas, it was not to be, and Ellen Lawlor from Naas GC, took the Duggan Cup home with her.

Others who featured in the Duggan Cup winning enclosure over the over the weekend included Ger Lynch (2nd nett qualifier), Neasa McKiernan (3rd nett qualifier).

Well done Leonie on getting to the final, well-done to all the competitors who competed so well, and well-done Newlands Golf Club for your part in hosting a great championship.
