AnneMarie Lawley wins the 2018 TGS’s Prize to the Ladies

AnneMarie Lawley with a score befitting a winner (44 points playing off a handicap of 12) won the Thursday’s Golf Society’s Prize to the Ladies on Tuesday last, 24th July. And as she accepted her beautiful prize from the Captain of the Thursday’s Golf Society, Brendan O’Brien, she recalled her Dad’s (David) membership of the Thursdays and the last game he played with them.

It seemed like it was meant to be – a special win for AnneMarie, and a time to recall a special person in her life.

Several pairings vie for top spot in Eleanora Open

Congratulations to Sandra Rothwell (19) and Rita Morley (15) who won the Eleanora Bar and Lounge Open Fourball with 46 points, beating Ann Hughes(8) and Deborah McCreedy (20) on the last nine.

We also congratulate Paul Greene (17) and Aidan O’Reilly (18) won the semi-open organised for the men, with a score of 42 points.

Thanks to our sponsors Loretto and Christy Keane (Eleanora Bar and Lounge) for their very generous prizes. We appreciate and are very grateful for your continued support.

We played in pink, and we played a blinder

Our play in pink day on Tuesday 17th June, 2018 was a great success. All sections of the club participated- Ladies, Men, Get into Golfers, and some Juniors – we all played in pink. Bliss Cuisine entered into the spirit, and Sean and Jess donned their pink outfits too, and together we raised a considerable amount of money for Breast Cancer Research.

The generosity of sponsors Des Kenny (Frontline Mechanical Engineering) and Greg Harkness (Harkness Electric) is to be commended. Their great prizes (a TV and designer watches) contributed hugely to the success of the raffle.

The overall total has yet to be finalised, but we expect to have raised in the region of €3000.

We congratulate the winners of the Ladies competition – Lorraine Faughnan and Marie McLaughlin – and Phillip Keegan who won the men’s competition. Dylan Harbourne, Ellen Rockett and Kate Nolan featured for the juniors.

We thank you all for your support and generosity, and for recognising the need and necessity for on-going research into breast cancer.

This won’t be happening, but we are playing in pink, Tues 17th July

A Ladies fourball competition (from 8.30am) and Men’s singles competition (from 5.30pm) together with our ‘Get into Golfers’ will see Newlands ‘Play in Pink’ for Breast Cancer Research on Tuesday 17th July, 2018. This research is carried out by NUI, Galway and relies entirely on voluntary contributions, so we are delighted to join with many other golf clubs to offer our support.

For the Ladies, the format of the ‘Play in Pink’ Invitational is Fourball, and the time-sheet starts at 8.30am. The top 30 scores from all the participating clubs will go on to play in the ‘Play in Pink’ National Final in Galway, in September.

The ladies competition will be followed by a 9-hole singles competition for men – playing in pink – with tee-times from approximately 5.30pm onwards, and our Get into Golfers will play the ‘back-nine’ in pink. Even lessons with Karl and Amy will be in pink.

Time-sheet is open, join in the fun and help us to support breast cancer research.

Christy Green Open brings record numbers out to compete

The weather was great, the numbers competing were up, and we congratulate Bernadette Flynn, Edel Tolan, Sinead Johnson and Christine O’Gorman on their 91 point victory in this Team of Four competition.

This Open, has had a date in our calendar for almost 20 years. For the last two years it has been sponsored by Nessa Green in memory of her Dad, Christy, and we thank Nessa for continuing her very generous support.

A great day, in memory of a great man.

Ladies Senior Foursomes win East Leinster Matchplay final

Our Ladies Senior Foursomes team had a great weekend of golf in Millicent Golf Club last Saturday and Sunday – 30th June/1st July.

Having qualified last May, the team of Esme Murphy, Orla Heffernan, Louise Halpin, Mary K O’Mahony, Mags O’Connell, Ann Hughes and Roseline Cunningham had great wins over Milltown, Rathfarnham in the semi-final, and Elm Park in the final.

Manager Grainne Friel and Assistant Manager Sheilagh Keogh couldn’t speak highly enough about the high standard of golf their team played throughout the tournament and particularly in the final, and they are already preparing for, and looking forward to the District Final in Seapoint on the 2nd September.

Thank you Purple Army for turning up in such great numbers, you are simply the best.

A fantastic achievement, well done Team SF, roll on September.
