Anna Usher wins Captain Pam Power’s Prize

It was her second Captain’s prize having won her first in 1982 (Captain Eileen Williamson’s prize), honorary member of both Newlands Golf Club and the ILGU (in recognition of her services to both institutions), admired by everyone connected with Junior Golf, and a prominent member of the Ladies Section, Anna Usher won Captain Pam Power’s prize to the Ladies with a fantastic aggregate score of 75 points.

When the result was announced the room stood in joyful recognition to applaud and celebrate a fantastic achievement by a fantastic woman. It was fitting too that her sons, daughters, and grandchildren arrived to join in the celebrations. These celebrations should, quite rightly, go on for some time.

A legend in her own lifetime.

Well done Anna Usher.

Great Result for Newlands Junior

Three Newlands Juniors made the long journey to Castle Dargan on Wednesday to play in the Irish U16 Boys Amateur Open Championship. This was an ambitious challenge as the cream of Irish Junior Golf would all be present. Having one boy qualify for the final round would have been seen as a great success. In the event all three boys qualified to play in the final round. Oisin Reilly, the youngest of the lads, shot an amazing one over par 73 in the first round before qualifying along with Charlie Connell and Dylan Harbourne.

Anyone familiar with the juniors will be aware of the hard work and constant practice put in by the lads. Indeed there can be few Newlands members who have not seen them on the course, on the practice green or practice area putting in the hard work which had seen them become almost automatic choices for Senior Newlands teams before this week’s success story.

In recent years Newlands has been lucky to have juniors like Jake Whelan and Cameron Raymond to follow as they did us proud in major events or in representing us in Provincial and International teams. It’s wonderful to see that their example has been followed by Charlie, Oisin and Dylan. We can only wish them well in the final round today (Friday) and congratulate them what is already a fine achievement.
