Vice-Captain Pam introduces her nominee for Vice-Captain 2018 – Marie Harpur

At the Ladies Bumper dinner, and Club Trophies Presentation on Tuesday last, 24th October 2017, Vice-Captain Pam proposed, Marie Harpur as her nominee for Vice-Captain of the Ladies Club for 2018. A very popular choice, the announcement was greeted with universal approval by all those present.

Marie, together with her husband David, and son James, has been a member of Newlands for many years, she has served on several committees, has represented Newlands in inter-Club matches, and in all of these roles has shown initiative, leadership and dedication. She is a keen bridge player, and always willing to take a gamble to make a contract!

Our 2017 Vice-Captain Pam, commented how deserving Marie was of the honour and how she looked forward to working with her, alongside Captain Jack and his nominee Lex Flavin (and we send Lex the congratulations of everyone in the Ladies Section) and the Management Team for the good of Newlands Golf Club in 2018.

The Annual Captain (Siobhán) -v- Hon Sec (Susan Dunphy) match was fiercely competitive

Played annually since 1933, the Ladies Annual Captain -v- Hon Sec match (Captain Siobhán v Hon Sec Susan Dunphy) took place last Friday 20th October, 2017.

While in 1933 the competition was intended to be a match play event by the then Captain of the Ladies Section, Ms Evans, it has in recent years been played as a team event.

Bereft of a trophy for the entire season, the Captain was thrilled to hear that her team had the winning score – ‘the turkeys’ took the honours, and the Captain’s name will go into the history books.

Thank you so much to all the Ladies who baked the simply delicious cakes for the after-match refreshments. And as life is too short to say no to cake, it was a feast with friends. #StillStuffed

Keeping it in the Family, Anna and Cian claim top spot

Sponsored by Padraig Fowley, the Mixed Invitation on Tuesday last, 17th October, 2017 was a great success. Well done to Gerry Byrne and the course staff for their efforts to have the course in such good condition after ‘Ophelia’ and well done too to all the competitors who recorded great scores on the day.

Anna Usher and Cian Coughlan, with a score of 43.75 took top spot. ‘They’ve Got Talent’ that family, all following in the matriarch’s footsteps – top golfers every one, and we send them our congratulations.

The winners are pictured above with Captain Siobhán and our sponsor Padraig Fowley, whom we thank sincerely for his support.

Lex Flavin nominated as Vice Captain 2018

Jack Dunne, incoming Captain of Newlands Mens Golf Club, has nominated Lex Flavin as his Vice Captain 2018.

In his announcement Jack said ” I am delighted to nominate Lex Flavin as my Vice Captain for 2018. I have known Lex for over 50 years during which time we have represented Newlands on numerous InterClub teams and GUI competitions.  Lex has served on the Course Committee and as Junior Convenor in his time as a member of Newlands. I wish him the very best for 2018.”

Trophy Night 2017 … what a laugh!

The star of Aprés Match, Barry Murphy, and legendary stand-up comic Sil Fox enthralled Newlands with a hilarious evening on Men’s Trophy Night 2017.

Collecting an award on the night exposed you to the cutting satirical comments from Barry!
